Music Director / Pipa / Sanxian / Guitar

A founding member of Dama, Seng Chew won the National Pipa Championship back in 1978 before proceeding to London to study classical guitar at the London College of Music. Upon his graduation, he got a musician part playing the pipa and guitar in the West End production of M Butterfly, in its production run at the Haymarket Theatre, Leicester and Shaftsbury Theatre, London. He also founded the London Chinese Ensemble – performing violin-cello-dizi-pipa-vocal works – and was employed by the Inner London Educational Authority as a lecturer in Chinese Music. He has given extensive performances throughout Britain, including the Sun Yat Sen's Centenarian Commemoration Concert at the Royal Theatre and concert performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Seng Chew toured Australia and Thailand with the Penang Symphony Orchestra, performing the pipa concerto Little Sisters Of The Grassland. He was also invited to perform the pipa with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in the Yellow River Piano Concerto concert. He has also conducted music appreciation talks on Western classical music in association with the national Chinese news media. He makes regular pilgrimages to China and the UK to catch up with opera and musical productions.
