Synopsis
This gem of a production featured the live performance of a legendary songstress from the golden era of shi dai qu. Liu Yun born in Beijing but based in Hongkong presented her evergreen Mandarin classics and hits in her rare public appearance. She was noted for almost single handedly bringing Chinese folk music back into the mainstream in the 50s-60s. Although famed as a leading recording artiste, she had done very few live performances throughout her career. This special collaboration with Dama offered a truely rare and unique insight into the life and music of a singing legend.
Appearing with Liu Yun in this concert as guest singer was the homegrown soprano from Penang, Tan Soo Suan. She is one of the only two sopranos crowned the Grand Champion in the history of Malaysian Classical Singing Competition. Soo Suan’s recent debut concerts “The Songs In Me” were performed to full houses. Baritone Liau Siau Suan, a recognized talent in both the local English and Chinese performing arts scene, also appeared as a guest artiste in this showcase. The narration was provided by Ian Ng Aik Soon.
